Zero Liquid Discharge Systems

How Zero Liquid Discharge Systems Works?

Zero liquid discharge is a water treatment where all water is recovered and contaminants are reduced to solid waste. Water treatment processes effort to maximize improvement of freshwater and reduce waste, ZLD is the most demanding goal since the cost and challenges of recovery increase as the wastewater gets more concentrated.  It includes reverse osmosis, ultra filtration, evaporation and various other membrane technologies.

Benefits to targeting zero liquid discharge for an industrial process or facility:

  • Lowered waste volumes reduce the cost associated with waste management.
  • Reprocess water on site, lowering water gaining costs and risk.
  • Reduce trucks associated with off-site waste water disposal, and their associated greenhouse gas impact.
  • Superior environmental performance and regulatory risk profile for future permitting.

Technoforce Pvt. Ltd. offers Zero Liquid Discharge System which is highly cost-cutting, environment friendly in nature. It is a system consisting of a stripper column for removal of organic volatiles from the feed stream. It does so because consequently when the water gets evaporated; it should have less organics left as residue.

ZLD System also consist Multiple Effect Evaporator with a thermo-compressor for achieving energy economy, and a downstream Sludge Dryer for eliminating the balance water, converting the solids into a dry powder which is cheaper and easier to order. The well-designed system saves operating and disposal costs and minimizes scaling in the evaporators.

How does a ZLD treatment system work?

Specific treatment processes vary, but a typical Zero Liquid Discharge treatment facility process will usually include the following steps:

Pretreatment and conditioning
Pretreatment is used to remove simple things from the wastewater stream that can be filtered or precipitated out, conditioning the water and reducing the suspended solids and materials that would otherwise scale and/or foul following treatment steps.
Phase-one concentration
Concentrating in the earlier stages of ZLD is usually done with membranes like reverse osmosis (RO), brine concentrators, or electrodialysis.
Evaporation/crystallization
After the concentration step is complete, the next step is generating a solid, which is done through thermal processes or evaporation, where you evaporate all the water off, collect it, and reuse it. Adding acid at this point will help to neutralize the solution so, when heating it, you can avoid scaling and harming the heat exchangers.
Recycled water distribution/solid waste treatment
If the treated water is being reused in an industrial process, it’s typically pumped into a holding tank where it can be used based on the demands of the facility. The ZLD treatment system should have purified the water to be reused safely in your process.
