Thin Film Technology Application - Short Path Distillation Unit (SPDU)

Design and Working:

Technoforce offers a two stage Short Path Distillation Unit (SPDU), which is also known as Molecular Distillation Unit. It is based on Thin Film Technology which has its greatest advantages!
Unlike standard Agitated Thin Film Evaporator, it has an internally mounted condenser. The configuration is with an internal condenser which eliminates pressure drop between the heated film and the condenser surface. It happens because the vapor generated on the heated surface travels a very short distance to reach the condenser surface. Thus, it can be operated at pressures down to 0.001 mbar. It can even operate at Fine Vacuum Range.

The most amazing significance of Molecular Distillation Unit is that the Operating Vacuum as low as 0.001 mbar definitely helps in distilling high boiling and heat sensitive products even at lower temperatures.

The vacuum in the second stage has to be 0.001 mbar to ensure distillation at a low enough temperature so as to get the required quality of the product. It also ensures minimum loss of product with the residue.
The purity depends upon how nicely the volatile impurities are distilled out in the first stage. A fine control at this stage is important so that the loss of main product is minimum at this stage. It is this reason that the SPDU is widely used for Fatty Acid Distillations and Tocopherol Distillations.
